What is a privacy policy and why are they so important?

According to hackerdictionary.com a privacy policy is:

A privacy policy is a statement/legal document that every software company has on their website. The goal of this statement is to inform the user of which personal information is gathered, how it is used, and how it is protected.

Moreover, according to privacytrust.com a privacy policy is:

A privacy policy is one of the most important documents on any website.

What this basically means is that a privacy policy is a document that a company uses to tell the users about the lifecycle of their data that is generated when they use the piece of software. This is really important to understand because many people uses pieces of software without knowing what data they are generating for the company.

A classic example of this is Facebook and all of their suite of products. People got really angry at Facebook back in January of 2012 for allegedly manipulating people’s moods when they didn’t understand the terms of service they had agreed to.
